If we were to guess how many people struggle with dry hair it would be over 85%. One of the most common concerns in our shop is the integrity of the hair. How do you know id your hair is dry? It will be limo, feel like straw, it may tangle and it dries super fast. Dry hair can be the result of damaged brittle hair. But let’s get into the truth of it all.

Myth #1 – Oil is good for dry hair. This is true! —but there’s a catch. Oil is only good for hair when formulated specifically at the molecular level that can be absorbed into the hair. Traditional oils such as coconut oil are only able to lay on the surface of the hair. When the hair is coated with large molecule oil it looses the ability to to absorb water and any nutrients. This can make the hair extremely dry. If you want to use a oil it is recommended that you leave the science up to the experts and choose a brand that offers an oil that has small molecules designed for hair. An oil that cannot be overused and one that aids in replenishing the natural lipids and fatty acids in the hair. Products we love: Kerasilk Multi-benefit oil and the Davines Oi Oil. Both are stunning products with a lot of research behind them.

Myth #2 – A deep treatment will get rid of my dry hair issues. FALSE! A deep treatment in salon or an at home mask can help make the hair feel better and repair the hair’s integrity but it cannot make the hair perfect. We always recommend maintaining your hair with haircuts to stay ahead of the dry and damaged ends. Prevention is key. However if your hair is dry from chemical process, pool or mineral water, the sun or heat styling you can reduce the dryness. We recommend kick starting your rehydrating routine with an in salon treatment followed by an at home mask. The in salon treatment will have stronger technology to get further into the hair at a more reparative level. These will help level out porosity and set your hair up for a foundation to be built on at home. Our fav rehydrating hero’s are: Kerasilk Liquid Cuticle Filler and Davines Naturaltech Replumping Superactive. Both sprays can be used following moisturizing shampoos such as the Kerasilk Repairing Shampoo or the Davines Naturaltech Replumping Shampoo. For an at home mask it is hands down the Kerasilk Repairing Mask. We love this based on the results and the price.

Myth #3 – Washing my hair dries it out. FALSE! We hear this all the time. If the products you are using at home don’t make your hair feel and perform AMAZINGLY they aren’t the right products for you or your hair. If you find your hair dry from washing we recommend switching to a co-wash every other time. This is a product that gently removes impurities, sweat and product without actually shampooing. It’s mild. Follow with a conditioner or mask that revitalizes the lipids, fatty acids and balances porosity. For the co-wash we recommend Davines Curl Cleansing Cream. This is for any hair type but it targeted to curls because they are more prone to dryness and damage. Your hair may not require frequent washing but it is important that your scalp be exfoliated, massaged and your hair be protected from environmental stressors. Washing is an essential part.

Myth #4 – Keratin and bond builders will fix my hair. This is not true when it comes to dryness. A lot of these products can aid in hydration BUT the reason why they can be effective is because healthy hair retains moisture better. That being said, too much keratin or bonds in the hair can push out hydration and offset the balance in the hair. We recommend rotating through two hair care cleansing/conditioning routines. Hair is very multifaceted and if you are struggling with hydration you don’t want to overuse a product. Use one routine for 2-3 weeks or until the hair starts to feel better and then switch. A good product will build the hair up and it won’t require consistent use of the product once the hair is healthy.
